Mondes Américains |

Presentation

Founded in 2006 under the double aegis of the CNRS and the EHESS, Mondes Américains (formerly called MASCIPO) is a mixed humanities and social sciences research unit based on a federation of 5 research centers affiliated with the EHESS, University Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne, and University of Paris Nanterre. It includes historians and cultural anthropologists working on the Americas from the early colonial period to the present. Clément Thibaud (EHESS) is the director of Mondes Américains, while Anath Ariel de Vidas (CNRS), and Gilles Havard (CNRS) are the assistant directors.

Mondes Américains is regional in its focus: its objective is to cover the entire western hemisphere, from Vancouver to Patagonia, not isolating the Americas from the rest of the world. The distinctiveness of its scientific project is based on collaboration between members of the laboratory working on North American and Latin American studies, and on a continuing dialogue between the fields of history and anthropology. The Americas are construed as a laboratory for the social sciences and are explored at different scales of analysis – regional, continental, Atlantic, and global- through a comparative and connected perspective.

The group concentrates on a number of shared topics within our collective research programs, which traverse disciplines, cultural areas, and time periods :
• The first globalization led by empires of the major western European powers
• The process of formation of new societies in colonial situations
• The expression of sensitivity and emotions in a multiethnic context
• Transnational history through the experience of human migrations and the circulation of knowledge
• Issues related to the process of the construction of the State and to the interactions between the State and society
• The challenge of ethnicity (or identity claims) analyzed over the long-term.
